Here is one of only tweenty-two original unfinished 3" Confederate Read shells that was found in the early 80's at the Atlanta Arsenal. This one has remained in Dr. Lawrence Pawl's collection for all these years. Not only is this one unfinished but the sabot was turned down and then stopped after the first 1/8" of the bottom bourrelet.
